Villwock Tops Gold Cup Qualifying

Dave Villwock drives 1 Spirit of Qatar 96 to top of qualifying ladder for Detroit APBA Gold Cup.

Dave Villwock drove Erick Ellstrom’s 1 Spirit of Qatar 96 to the top of the qualifying ladder for the Detroit Yacht Club APBA Gold Cup during “Pole Position” qualifying on Friday.

The defending Gold Cup champion posted a two lap average of 162.904 on the 2.5 mile course on the Detroit River.

Steve David qualified the city of Madison, Indiana’s 6 Oh Boy! Oberto at 161.789 to take 2nd spot and rookie Jimmy Shane turned in an impressive 157.184 in Ted Porter’s 5 Graham Trucking for 3rd.

Three boats failed to qualify but will be allowed to race on Saturday.  Scott Liddycoat’s team is repairing a broken skid fin bracket on the 88 Degree Men.  13 Tubby’s Grilled Subs frustrated Cal Phipps with fuel control problems and Gregg Hopp had two N2 violations in the 100 Jarvis Property Restoration.
