When Steve David drove top qualifier 1 Oh Boy! Oberto to victory in Heat 1A of the Albert Lee Appliance Cup on Seattle’s Lake Washington Saturday – no one was surprised.

But Mike Webster’s win in Heat 1B driving the 22 Boitano Homes presents Performance Tools was surprising to everyone including Webster and his new sponsors who were surprised and very pleased.

Jon Zimmerman in the 9 Fox Plumbing presents Team RedDOT powered by Les Schwab secured lane one before the start and staged a deck-to-deck battle with Kip Brown in the 95 Spirit of Qatar for the lead.  But officials ruled both had jumped the start clock, sending them back to fourth and fifth.

Pre-race favorite Jimmy Shane in the 5 Graham Trucking had engine trouble and did not make the start of the heat.

The penalties on Zimmerman and Brown moved third place Webster up to first.  Rookie Jamie Nilsen, in his first race as a qualified driver, finished second.

Heat 1A began with J Michael Kelly in the 37 Miss Beacon Plumbing and Brian Perkins in the 21 Albert Lee Appliance parking in the inside lanes and moving slowly around to the one minute “score up” buoy. David drove around them in lane three and achieved the overlap on Perkins, taking over lane two at the start. Kelly challenged from the inside for two laps before dropping back to second with Perkins third and Mark Evans in the 57 Fedco fourth and Tom Thompson in the 11 Peters and May fifth.

Racing will resume Sunday with Heat 2A at 11:10 am.
