In Detroit, the crew of Dave Bartush’s Spirit of Detroit is working hard to get the boat ready for a complete circuit in 2012. The team hopes to have work completed in time to make the season opener in Madison.

The Detroit Unlimited Team will combine forces with Dr. Ken Muscatel’s Superior Racing of Seattle in 2012.  Equipment and personnel from both teams will be involved in the operation, with Superior Racing’s Jay Leckrone playing a key role and Muscatel’s Seattle shop acting as the team’s Western home.

Jeff Sankuer

The boat has undergone a fairly major rebuild, including removing decks and tightening frames where needed. Additional support was added in key areas of the hull where it was needed.

As with several other boats, the 13 needed updating on the skid fin bracket to comply with H1’s 2012 specifications.

The team’s engine inventory has been reworked and declared race ready.

Deck hatches were removed, repainted and replaced.  Bull noses (leading edge of the center section) were upgraded to improve the boat ride.

Cal Phipps will return as the team’s primary driver and expects to make the entire domestic circuit with the team. He will appreciate work that was done on the cockpit area which will improve the seating and other features.

In 2011, with the Spirit of Detroit not on the circuit, Phipps was a backup driver for Kip Brown in the 17 Miss Red Dot and helped Our Gang Racing to a top 5 finish in national high points.

Luke Underhill

Tubby’s Grilled Subs, the Detroit sandwich chain that sponsored Jones Racing and Mike Hanson’s victory in the 2001 Gold Cup, will be on board for the 2012 Gold Cup in July.

This hard-charging team and driver have proven to be tough competitors and have a style that has earned them many fans on the H1 Unlimited Tour.

Cal-Phipps

Cal Phipps will do the driving at all domestic races in 2012.

The partnership between Dave Bartush and Ken Muscatel will give the team expanded resources and man power and should give them the ability to be very competitive in 2012.

The team looks forward to being back in the Air National Guard series on a full time basis and It will be great for the sport and their fans to have them back.
