After suffering the difficult loss of Leland Unlimited owner Fred Leland, the sport got some good news when it was announced that Fred’s family would keep the team on the water for the 2012 season.

With Tim Shadduck handling the operations and acting as crew chief and driver Greg Hopp acting as owner’s rep. The team will represent Fred Leland again in 2012.

The familiar black and maroon boat will make the trip to Madison.

Shadduck, along with Barney Tavener and other crew members then set out to get the team’s primary race boat ready for the season opener in Madison.

The team plans to make the entire Air National Guard Series circuit in 2012, running as Leland Unlimited except in markets where local sponsors come on board.

Fox Plumbing of Seattle will be the title sponsor for the races in Washington State, with a formal  announcement coming soon.

2011 boat

The boat that started the 2011 season is race ready also, and may see display duty for Fox Plumbing.

A visit to Leland Unlimited in Kirkland, East of Seattle, finds work progressing well and the team well equipped with race ready engines and gear boxes as well as a good supply of spare parts.

The team’s primary hull to start the season will be the black and maroon boat that driver Greg Hopp prefers.  It is the one that the team used to finish the season in 2011.

Hopp says the boat is his favorite of all the Leland hulls.  “It really just handles better than the other boats we have available,” said Hopp.  “It lets me drive harder and accelerates better and gives me a better chance to stay with the front runners.”

Shadduck has been busy in the team’s dyno, located in a separate building on the same property.  The team has four freshly dynoed engines race ready to start the season and at least a half dozen Leland gear boxes ready to give the crew and driver many options for ratios and setup.

Gear boxes

No shortage of gear boxes.

After an off-season that was emotionally tough for the race team and their many fans, it’s going to be great to see this popular team and their veteran driver continuing the long tradition of Leland Unlimited and racing on in the name of their late leader.

This is a  team that knows how to win, having won national championships and Gold Cups. Adding to that list of wins in 2012  would create a very heartfelt celebration throughout the sport.  We can expect the Leland Unlimited team to be even more of a fan favorite in 2012.

Automotive boat

Crew Chief Tim Shadduck plans to continue Fred Leland's project to power this hull with automotive engines in the future.
