Big Fast Field Set For Lucas Oil Madison Regatta

Driver Dave Villwock is looking to become the sport’s all-time winningest driver as the Air National Guard Series starts its 2011 season at the 61st annual Madison Regatta in Madison, Indiana this weekend.

But to get the record, Villwock will have to overcome the most competitive fields in decades. Twelve boats are expected to take to the Ohio River as hometown favorite Oh Boy! Oberto, owned by the city of Madison and driven by Steve David, is aiming to win its fourth-consecutive high points national championship. But standing in the way of both drivers are a number teams with either new or significantly improved equipment.

Villwock has amassed 62 race wins during his illustrious unlimited hydroplane career, tying all-time leader Bill Muncey. Muncey’s record has stood for 30 years and was matched last year by Villwock when he won the Oryx Cup in Doha, Qatar.

If there is added pressure on the Spirit of Qatar driver going into Madison, he certainly isn’t showing it.  Villwock left his Seattle-area home nearly two weeks before the race to take a leisurely trip in his luxury RV to Madison.

“I’ll run the same way I always have,” Villwock said. “I want to win the race and if I can break (Bill) Muncey’s record that would be great. It’s not something I’m constantly thinking about.”

Boneyard Bash II Set For Madison

Boneyard Bash Band

A cornucopia of things will be happening during Regatta weekend in Madison, Ind, forth of July weekend.  The usual, H1 Unlimited racing with our own U-1 Miss Madison/Oh Boy! Oberto, parade and the fire works show.  But one of the more colorful events will be the BoneYard Bash 2, Thursday, June 30.
The BoneYard Bash originally designed for fans to mingle with the sports more visible personalities, in just its second year has become much more.
Hosted by Madison’s sports themed family restaurant, the BoneYard Grill, this year’s event will be a must attend for every hydroplane race fan young and old.
The 13-living Miss Madison drivers are scheduled to attend and there will be a special acknowledgement for their individual accomplishments to the Miss Madison Racing program from 8:00p-9:00p.
The drivers, coming from as far away as Washington and Florida include Buddy Byers, the senior Miss Madison driver along with Tom Sheehy (1973/1982), Milner Irvin (1974/1978-81/1984), Ron Snyder (1976/1982-84/1986-88), Jon Peddie (1977-78), Andy Coker (1985-86), Jerry Hopp (1986/2000), Mitch Evans (1988.), Mike Hanson (1988-98.), Todd Yarling (1999), Charley Wiggins (2000), Nate Brown (2000), and current driver Steve David will be on hand for the celebration.
Surprise guest and actor Jim Caviezel who played the driver in the motion picture Madison was scheduled to attend the Bash however, last minute obligations will keep the star from attending the event this year.
“Never before have we ever had all the Miss Madison living drivers together and we are sure the fans will love retelling their memories of hydroplane racing to their favorite Miss Madison drivers,” Team Manager Charlie Grooms said.
In addition to the former Miss Madison drivers, Brian Perkins, driver of the U-21 Go Fast, Turn Left H1 hydro will be back to defend his celebrity waiter trophy against his fellow racing competitors.
Current unlimited drivers will wait on tables Thursday evening in the BoneYard Grill with the tips going to area Madison charities.  Last year the drivers collected over $2,000 and they are excited to return.
“I can’t wait to get to Madison to see all the fans and friends.  The BoneYard Brash is a great way for fans to get up close and personal with us and we will have the Martini and Rossi National High Points Trophy on display and that is a site much like the Grand Canyon.  Pictures don’t do the trophy justice,”  Steve David said from his Florida home.
Outside the BoneYard Grill will be two bands performing beginning at 6:00p.  Scheduled to play on the Ladder 51 stage will be The Rumors (8:45p-Mid-night) and  Bob Laffery Trio (6:00p-8:00p).  In addition to the music, there will be a mini-bar & BBQ pork sandwiches and pork dinners available.
Christian Hanson, co-owner of the BoneYard Grill said that in addition to the Boys & Girls Club, Girls Inc., Habitat For Humanity, and the Youth Shelter will be the charities the event will help support.
Tickets are $10. Children under 10 Free.  No Pre-sales. Gate opens at 6:00p.
Aerobatic Pilot Added to Madison Regatta Airshow

Brett Hunter Airshows will be thrilling the crowds this weekend as part of the festivities at the 61st annual Madison Regatta, which features the Air National Guard Series unlimited hydroplanes.

Aerobatic pilot Brett Hunter will perform over the Ohio River this Saturday and Sunday during breaks in the racing action. His bright red propeller-driven plane has been thrilling crowds throughout the Midwest for years.

When Hunter isn’t performing rolls or drops that would make even the toughest pilots’ stomach rumble, Hunter flies corporate aircraft and airshows.

Hunter has been interested in aircraft since childhood where he sat on a stack of phonebooks so he could fly his father’s Piper Tripacer. He not only trains other pilots have to fly aerobatic planes, Hunter also competes in aerobatic competitions.

The airshow is part of a busy weekend in Madison, Ind., that includes boat racing, a concert and a Saturday night fireworks spectacular.
