DYC Gold Cup Event Raises $100,000

The Detroit Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Detroit River Regatta Association (DRRA), hosted a fundraising dinner party and auction on May 6 to benefit the 2011 APBA Detroit Gold Cup Races, scheduled for July 8 – 10 on the Detroit River.  The event raised more than $100,000 from ticket sales and live and silent auction activities.  More than 600 people were in attendance, including local dignitaries and guests from both the U.S. and Canada.

The amount raised will go toward operating expenses for this year’s Gold Cup Races.

“The community response to the fundraiser was tremendous and we are very grateful for their support,” said Dr. A.J. Telmos, Commodore, Detroit Yacht Club.  “People rallied behind this Detroit tradition, and the Detroit Yacht Club was very proud to host the event.”

The Detroit Yacht Club is the Presenting Sponsor for this year’s Gold Cup Races, leading the fundraising efforts for the event, including seeking businesses, individuals and clubs to help preserve one of the oldest, ongoing events in the city.  An additional Presenting Sponsor or Title Sponsor is still needed to confirm the race event.  Interested companies or individuals should contact Mark Weber at 586-774-0980.  Additional information is available from – [email protected]

Additionally, The 88 Degree Men owners Jane and Billy Schumacher made the trip from Seattle to attend the event and made the first public announcement about their new national sponsor, Degree Men and the new, corresponding paint theme for their boat.

The Gold Cup is considered the oldest contested motorsports trophy in the world, with Detroit hosting the longest running, yearly hydroplane race in the world.  The Detroit River racecourse is considered the most famous powerboat racecourse in the world.

“We greatly appreciate the region’s support in helping to keep the tradition of hydroplane racing alive on the Detroit River,” said Tom Bertolini, President, DRRA.  “Even in tough economic times, the generosity of metro Detroiters shines through.  Many remember going to the hydroplane races as a child – now it’s their turn to take their kids to the races and step up to preserve this historic event.”

The three-day event is scheduled to feature a “free Friday” with no admission charge.  In addition to the unlimited hydroplanes, vintage race boats, superlight tunnel boats and offshore race boats will be featured.  The U.S. Navy’s West Coast Super Hornet Demo Team is scheduled to return this year, performing flight demonstrations with one of the Armed Forces’ most impressive aircraft, the FA-18.
