With the two top qualifiers for the 2013 Coeur d’Alene drawn into separate Saturday qualifying heats, the outcomes looked predictable.  But both top qualifier Jimmy Shane in the 5 Graham Trucking and Steve David in the 1 Oh Boy! Oberto were challenged for the lead before getting out front and taking the checkered flag.

Heat 1A looked to be over before the start when Shane won the battle for lane one.  But a surprisingly strong challenge from Tom Thompson in the 11 Peters & May left the outcome in doubt until well into the three lap race.  Thompson finally settled back into second place after a strong run with Mark Evans in the 57 FEDCO finishing third.

In Heat 1B, J. Michael Kelly in the 37 Miss Beacon Plumbing won a lane inside of David’s and used his boat’s excellent turning ability to stay with David, giving the pre-race favorite a good race before settling for second.  Kip Brown in the 95 Spirit of Qatar finished third.

In an added feature, David also won the Knight El Dock Dash For Cash in a good race with Jeff Bernard driving the Spirit of Qatar.

Racing resumes Sunday at 11am PDT with the Riverstone Development H1 Unlimited Diamond Cup Final set for 4:00PM.
